O.K. I just wanted to say that after driving around New Orleans yesterday and seeing the devastation, I feel just a little silly about worrying about how they are going to remove the refrigerators.

I'm glad your car survived, at least. Have your folks been able to return yet?

Can you pretty much drive anywhere?
Is the city completely navigable?

I'm staying with my folks on the north shore. Their yard looked like something out of Alice in Wonderland. Huge trees down everywhere that you had to climb under or over to get to the house. All those trees down and not one hit the house. My parents internet just came back online a few seconds ago and thus I'm on the net right now.
New Orleans is not completely navigable. There are still sections that are so bad off that no one is allowed in them.

Glad to hear that things are slowly getting back to normal for you. I suppose the Ponchetrain Causeway has been open - that's good considering that I could only imagine it will take years to rebuild I-10.

I saw that the police beating was at the Absinthe House in the French Quarter - pretty fucked up.

Does anyone know how lazy police in New Orleans are? There is no way in hell they summoned up enough energy to beat up a man for no reason. He did something. (I can't believe I'm defending the New Orleans Police, but...) Some of the N.O.P.D. took off and some committed suicide. It had to be a stressful time. Maybe the media should back off a little from the ones who stayed and held New Orleans together this past month. It would also be nice if the media stopped stirring the pot of racial tension and left us alone to heal a little. After 9/11 the N.Y.P.D. were made into superheros, but the media (probably since they don't live here and are just bloodthirsty for stories) can't seem to stop ripping our N.O.P.D. apart. Be nice or go away!

Just a note on my last comment. "Be nice or go away!", is a sign that hangs in many bars in New Orleans. (...and I was referring to the media in New Orleans, not bloggers on my site.)

Maybe nobody said anything about misconduct on the part of NYC officers b/c there was no misconduct. They tried to protect the citizens instead of handing out beat downs.

As far as the racial sit. in NO, I guess they should have thought of that before they beat the living crap out of that guy.

Seriously, officers have to deal with drunken behaviour in the Quarter on a daily basis...I doubt that this was the first time they had come in contact with a non-compliant individual--I bet any amount of moeny that they don't normally do things like what was on that video.

I can accept that they were stressed and had a lot on their minds. Having said that, they are supposed to be able to keep their heads in a crisis; if they can't do that they need to find a new line of work...

I am sure I speak for everyone when I say that we could be doing a lot worse.
The pride of SW Louisiana State's football has obviously swept the whole state, and I don't think anyone's thinking much about their own plights as much as they once were.
