Islamic nations need to show some effort on their part to control the terrorist threat. I have nothing against Islam that I don't have against any religion, but the fact that every terrorist plan seems to be traced back to an Islamic country makes me think...."hmmm, what's wrong with these countries?" Holding "the world is prejudice against Islamic nations card" just won't work much longer. It's time for Islamic nations to take a very active role in accounting for it's peoples' actions. Being the most powerful nation in the world, I wouldn't put it past a president to look towards these increasing terrorist threats and say to the countries harboring them, "..and so why shouldn't we turn your nation into a flat glowing pancake?"
(These extreme thoughts stem from my anger at just reading the russian plane crash articles tied to a muslim extremist group.)

I think part of the equation is that what gets called terrorism in the media at the present time is mostly Islamic terrorism. And there is plenty of that. But there's also terrorism from other sources that isn't being called terrorism. The US, among others, support terrorist groups, too. So, I agree; all countries need to support proactive and reactive strategies to address terrorism.

good points. My statements were mainly reactionary, but I understand that media plays a role and that the IMF is holding alot of Islamic people hostage with debt. Terrorism is supposedly without country, but I believe countries are the only controlling bodies who could have an effect on controlling it.
That's about as rational as saying that the government of the US should be able to stop all crime within its borders.
I would imagine that your resonse to someone who criticizes the US crime rate would be 'Hey, we're doing what we can.' Why should it be any different when dealing with terrorists?
There is only so much that a 'government' can do. The anger of the terrorists is to some degree the same anger that Islamic leaders have. The US has not been nice. The US has supported terror and anarchy in these countries. Many of those terror recruits are people who have suffered as a result of US policies.
In effect you are saying to those people 'Get over it.' It would be more reasonable if the policies and behavior that have angered these extremists to the point where they would commit mass murder had changed.
I think that the Iraq invasion proves that they have not.
It is assuredly the responsibility of all nations in the world to do whatever they can to bring those who commit these heinous acts to justice.
Just as it is the responsibility of the world to ensure that the conditions which CREATE these extremists are ameliorated.
Take your anger and use it to make a difference. If you won't do that, you may count yourself just as guilty as the leaders of those Islamic nations and the US government.
(Hops off of soapbox and waves goodbye.)
US nationals need to show some effort on their part to control the threat of US action abroad. I have nothing against the US that I don't have against any nation, but the fact that every imperialist plan seems to be traced back to the US makes me think...."hmmm, what's wrong with that country?" Holding "the world is prejudice against US freedom card" just won't work much longer. It's time for US nationals to take a very active role in accounting for it's peoples' actions.
now ask yourself what you've done today to stop the US from invading another country. i'm not claiming to be any better than joe six-pack (in fact, call me joe), just pointing out (as "anonymous on a soapbox" did) that it's kinda silly to blame the average citizen in one of those states for terrorism at large.
I was talking about Islamic nation governments being accountable for its people's actions. Accountable is not what I'm really looking for there though. Governments should take a larger role in breaking up terrorist networks within their borders. All this is pretty naive talk from me, that as I said just stemmed from the anger of reading about the Russian plane crashes. I so wish the U.S. would have stayed on course with the fight against terrorism and gained world support. We would have been much closer to having a somewhat winnable war. I do believe I'm standing in the mucky muck of my own quickly spouted angry post on a subject I know very little about.
Our nation's war on terror should have been directed toward winning the influence of peoples in third world countries. Not that there will always be someone or some group opposed to our materialist values, we could have at least, with the aid of these countries, marginilized the anti-western attitude that is prevalent. And that attitude that is present today, we heated up because of our war with Iraq.
What we have accomplished in Iraq, has only provided extremist groups a positive example of what kind of harm our nation & values can have on innocent people. Before we were simply the boogey man, something intangible that only a few radical extremists feared. Now we are something tangible, a monster that extremists can point at to the common people & yell "See - here is the devil, you could be next!"
Not that I totallydisagree with going to war against Iraq - but the reasons were invalid. It had nothing to do with terrorism, and though I hate conspiracy theories - you have to wonder. Does having a prolonged 'terrorist threat' help the democrats or the republicans?

i can't believe you had the nerve to criticize me for my lack of posting. - jib
My Goodness, though....
stick to you damned guns here, Emerson! The reason the Hard Left will never win another election for years to come is that Militant Islam ALWAYS gets a pass in these discussions, whilst the Bush/Cheney team are colored as the demon children of the Millennium.
The Hard Left forgets that terrororism was alive and well, way before this administration ever got into office. Even the most well-intentioned arbitrators, (Clinton at Oslo, the Wye Accors....Carter at Camp David) have seen their efforts ultimately sandbagged by Militant Islamists who desire nothing more than to unplug from any Western Influence, and indeed take the world back 1000 years.
